No Chickens, No Eggs

Each of the 26 Lao consonants is officially identified by one word and children learn the alphabet by reciting the consonant sound, then the word: gaw-gai (chicken), kaw-kai (egg), kaw-kwaai (buffalo), and so on. The alphabet books we've seen always use these same words and only these words.

For a new approach, Thongkham has selected eight new words and pictures for each letter. Children just learning to read can become familiar with the letters by using the pictures.
