With our books, we try to make literacy fun. Same with our school. A typical day includes reading time, drawing, outdoor play, sign language, and games.
Some activities we schedule only every week or two, such as the market game (4th picture) in which one group (such as children) gets play money and another (older students and visitors) get cards with vegetable pictures. Children compete to see who can buy the most different vegetables, driving hard bargains with the vendors, who try to collect the most money. It's a high-energy 30 minutes during which children develop number skills and practice bargaining.
